Ibogaine for Depression: What the Research and Clinical Experience Suggest

Living with depression can feel like sinking deeper into a hole you don’t know how to get out of. Perhaps you’ve tried medication and talk therapy, but still find yourself struggling to break free from its clutches. The color has drained out of life, and you’re not sure where to go next.

Here’s where ibogaine can help. If you have tried other treatments for depression with little success, it may be time to look into ibogaine therapy in Mexico.

Here’s how ibogaine can help relieve depressive symptoms.

Ibogaine acts on serotonin and dopamine systems related to mood regulation. Research has found that the brains of individuals with depression process reward, motivation, and meaning differently than those who don’t have depression. By interacting directly with these neurotransmitter systems, ibogaine helps people tap back into a deeper sense of meaning and emotional renewal.

Ibogaine is also shown to elicit a state of neuroplasticity in the brain during and after treatment. This increases the brain’s capacity to make new neural connections and override existing thought patterns and behaviors. For individuals with depression, who usually have reduced neuroplasticity, ibogaine makes it easier to break free from unhelpful mental loops and habits and build new, healthier ways of being.

During treatment, ibogaine also induces a profound psychedelic experience where individuals are often taken on a journey through their lives and have the opportunity to process, understand, and reframe past traumatic events. Trauma is a known precursor to depression for many, and by addressing their depression at the root, clients can move through painful past events, begin to integrate them into their whole being, and overcome daily depressive symptoms.

While it can produce profound results, ibogaine is a catalyst for insight and change – not a magic cure. Anyone coming to ibogaine for treatment-resistant depression should also understand the personal commitment required to experience meaningful outcomes. Yes, ibogaine will open the door, but you have to take the necessary steps to walk through it and create the change you wish to see in your life.

What to Expect During Treatment

If you’re curious about what ibogaine mood therapy looks like in practice, here’s a breakdown of an eight-day treatment protocol at Bassé.

Pre-treatment
Once you arrive at our center, we conduct a comprehensive medical assessment, including electrocardiograms, vital sign checks, and blood chemistry panels. Our team reviews this data and tailors a treatment plan so you can safely enter into ibogaine therapy. You’ll also meet with a psychologist to ensure mental and emotional readiness for treatment, as well as receive oral and IV supplementation to balance electrolyte levels.

Your Ibogaine Journey
On day four, your ibogaine journey unfolds. The effects can last between 12 and 24 hours, often starting with dreamlike visions and then moving into a phase of deep emotional processing and mental clarity. You’ll continue to be medically monitored, emotionally supported, and physically nourished as you come out of your experience and enter into the recovery stage for the following 24-48 hours.

Integration Begins
Once out of the acute experience, we will support you in landing back and processing your journey through an integration class and therapeutic bodywork. Our goal is to help you recalibrate your nervous system with softness and care, and step into your integration journey with ease. On your final full day, we’ll introduce you to our 30-day aftercare program, and you’ll connect with your practitioner on next steps once you leave our center.
